Theory of Wastewater Treatment:
The pretreatment process is an extended aeration system that will provide nitrification/denitrification treatment. Wastewater is biologically treated with naturally occurring bacteria. The bacteria uses the wastewater as food as converts it to its basic elements such as oxygen, hydrogen gas and other compounds that make up the solids in the wastewater. Oxygen is a necessary part of the treatment process for the bacteria that completes the nitrification process. The denitrification process occurs in the zone where the oxygen has been depleted and the bacterium strips the oxygen from the nitrate molecule and converts it to nitrogen gas.

System Description:
This wastewater system is an Onsite Wastewater Treatment System designed to serve individual houses, schools, industry as well as new housing developments with many homes. The wastewater collection and treatment system starts with a trash or septic tank at each house. The second component is a treatment facility which, consists of a 1,500 gallon three compartment tank. The first compartment is a 500 gallon anaerobic tank followed by a 500 gallon aerobic compartment and the final 500 gallon compartment is the dosing tank for the inground disposal system. The inground disposal system can be a mound system, a conventional trench system, a seepage bed or other accepted disposal system allowed in your county or region.

Design Summary:
The wastewater treatment system is designed as follows:

  Influent Effluent
CBOD 133 mg/l 2 mg/l
TSS 42 mg/l 4 mg/l
Nitrate-Nitrate 0.1 mg/l 3.14 mg/l
TKN 39.9 mg/l 6.05 mg/l
Fecal Coliform   < 2 mg/l

Effluent Limits:
This facility is designed to meet an annual average total nitrogen limit of 10 milligrams per liter (mg/L) at the point of discharge tot he soil treatment portion of the system.

With proper use and preventive maintenance, the Fessel System will be an economical asset and an environmentally friendly wastewater treatment system for many years.
